It begins with ideation.
Breaking down the story components into words and images.

Choosing a scene from the storyline to compose. In this fairytale, the witch is an owl or a cat during the day and becomes human at night.
I wanted to capture that transitional period while maintaining the bird and catlike mannerisms.

Once the elemental composition is chosen, I work on value studies.

After sketching the image in graphite onto a 20" x 16" canvas board, the tearing and gluing of tissue paper begins.

Cutting paper gives textural components to the witch feathers on her back. The collage itself will become the base layer for the final image.

The thumbnail is more fine-tuned with Procreate.

The collage is photographed, imported to Procreate, and lined up with the thumbnail image.

Using Procreate, more detail is added and manipulated to help create the luminescence and warmth of the composition.
